Better Than Yesterday

Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

In the early 1920s, Émile Coué, a French psychologist and pharmacist taught a healing-method using positive autosuggestion, by saying twenty times when you first woke up, and twenty times before you went to bed, “Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.” He also suggested repeating this mantra-like positive declaration a few times throughout the day. His results for healing the mind and body were very good and his method was considered avant-guard.
In the late fall of 2014, while I was recovering from the effects of a stroke that I had suffered, I used Émile Coué's saying day after day in my prayers. While I walked in the park and I forced my body to work through an exercise program the Lord had encouraged me to do, I would pray out loud, "Lord, God, I thank you, that every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better. In Jesus name.” Prov. 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Often, my friends and family would ask how I was feeling. I would repeat those healing words, "By the grace of the Lord, every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better." Yes, I did receive some strange looks, but I didn't care, because it was my life on the line and no one else's. I had to believe by faith for my healing, because I knew Jesus had suffered on the cross to get it for me. 1 Pet. 2:24 He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.
Eventually, days and months went by. I started feeling better than the previous day. Again, when asked how I was getting along, I would say, "Better than yesterday." I am blessed to report that five years later, I am doing very well and have overcome many health challenges, plus have fought many battles with God's help and I have conquered. Yes, there is still more to do and to keep doing. With the Lord's grace flowing through me, I am in much better shape mentally, physically, and spiritually than I was yesterday.
Through Christ, God has given us the authority and permission to say what God says in His word about our life situations. We just have to do it, no matter how silly or impractical people think we are being. After all, God did say we are a peculiar people. 1 Pet. 2:9a But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people. In this case, the word peculiar means special, and that - we are!
There is nothing new in what  Émile Coué was teaching. God had already revealed this method of healing thousands of years earlier. The Lord said, we should say and declare what the Word of God says we can be. Joel 3:10b Let the weak say, I am strong. Our Heavenly Father has given us His instruction through His word to say, "I am Strong!" We might even say it this way. "Every day, in every way, I'm getting stronger and stronger." Prov. 23:7a For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.
Jesus taught us to say to the mountains in our life - be thrown into the sea. Mark 11:23 Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Whatever mountains there are in our lives, they can be overcome by proclaiming God's living word. It will take faith and courage to stand in faith and declare God's promises in our lives. If we don't do it for ourselves, then who will? We have to say, "I am strong in the Lord!"
Whatever our Egypt is that we are escaping from, we have been given instructions by our God to declare the victory we want to have in Christ. We should understand that yesterday is gone and today must be lived in the salvation of the Lord Jesus. 2 Cor. 6:2 For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.
When is the day of salvation? Now! Today is the day of salvation. That is what will make this day better than yesterday. When we act on that truth, we will all be able to say, "Every day and every way my salvation is getting better and better, amen."

  1. I hear this and see the truth in this. But how does one balance this with the “flesh” of what could be happening? The condition I have disables me sometimes, and if I’m not honest about that, it looks to others that I’m not helpful or engaged in life. If I’m saying I’m better, when in truth I have a raging infection, it will be harder for me to ask for help or have others understand why I can’t always attend their functions. I hope that makes sense??

    1. Hi miss Jami

I hear your heart and thoughts. I know that you get up every time you get knocked down with this illness you are trying to get healed of.The facts are, your body is going through a terrible fight for life, and your soul feels exhausted from the battle. Your spirit is where you have the upper hand in this fight. The facts are your flesh is going through a disabling condition, but the truth is what God says about who you are in Christ and the authority you have over that condition. The facts are the pain you feel and the tiredness you live in. The truth is what the Lord says about your spirit man fighting with the sword of the spirit (His word) to destroy the works of the enemy coming against your life. The facts are what your flesh is going through, and the truth is, what God says you are and have in Him.This was the battle of the mind I was having when I could not walk straight because of the meds after the stroke. The facts were, I could not walk right and I was always dizzy plus couldn't concentrate. I felt drugged up and messed up. As it says in Eph. 6:13 "having done all to stand, stand therefore." The facts were, I had a hard time standing, but the truth was, God said I could stand, and therefore, I stood by faith even though I was swaying. I would thank God that I was standing tall, even though I was bent forward looking for something to hang onto. The facts were and still is my heart misses a beat, but I thank God that His truth says I am healed. I will not let 'my facts' replace the 'Lord's truth' of what He says about me and my life. I believe that if I keep declaring the truth of what God says about my life and condition, then eventually, God's truth will become my facts.I hope this long explanation helps and does not sound like a Charley Brown wah wah wah wah wah:) Love you sister and I am praying for your healing to be manifested and also God's truth about you becomes your fact.

    2. Whoops! I meant Charlie Brown and not Charley the other guy:)

  2. Thank you for defining this for me in a way that I can apply and understand. I do appreciate you taking the time to help me!! God bless!
