Disrespecting God

Proverbs 11:3 The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.

It is unsettling to know that there are people who mock and jeer at God for what He stands for. Yet the letter from Jude in the Bible warned us that there would be mockers in the last days, prating away about nonsensical things; even corrupting the truth about God. Jude 1:4 I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. Making fun of God or the man of God is not a new event. All throughout history, there has been persecution on people who stand for what is righteous and true.
We read in the book of Nehemiah the mockery the Jews received because they believed they were to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem by orders of God. Neh. 4:1 Sanballat was very angry when he learned that we were rebuilding the wall. He flew into a rage and mocked the Jews, saying in front of his friends and the Samarian army officers, “What does this bunch of poor, feeble Jews think they’re doing? Do they think they can build the wall in a single day by just offering a few sacrifices? Do they actually think they can make something of stones from a rubbish heap—and charred ones at that?”
The mockers went on to say that the walls could be knocked over by a fox walking on them. Jesus said this type of mockery and treatment could happen to us who are in Christ, because they had hated Him first, so not to be surprised that we also would be hated. John 15:18 If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.
We do not have to worry about defending God or the reasons we do what God has asked us to do. God can take care of Himself and those who love Him. Elisha was being harassed and mocked by some young men who did not respect the mantle of the Lord upon a man of God.
With a gang mentality, these malefactors thought it entertaining to shout out their two cents worth. However, there is a price to pay for the unbelief promoted against God. 2 Kings 2:23  Elisha left Jericho and went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, a group of boys from the town began mocking and making fun of him. “Go away, baldy!” they chanted. “Go away, baldy!” 24 Elisha turned around and looked at them, and he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of them. Now that is one grizzly result. What seemed funny at the start turned out to be a horrifying mauling death.
The word of God states clearly and emphatically that God is not mocked! Gal. 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. The world would word this verse this way, "What goes around comes around." Many of us have family members who mock and jeer our beliefs in Christ. They roll their eyes when we try to convey a biblical truth that is needed for the situation at hand. Do not fret nor be dismayed because they also did the same with our Lord. Just keep praying for them and be grateful that you are walking in the truth and love of the Lord.
The Apostles Peter, James, John and Paul were all mocked and disrespected. We are in good company. Matt. 5:11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Let us ask God for the strength and ability to continue in Christ and be the blessing of the Lord in this lost world. Amen.
