Dark Secrets

Proverbs 9:17 Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.

The above proverb is interesting because stolen and secret deals seem sweet and pleasant until the truth of this next proverb kicks into motion. Prov. 20:17 Stolen bread tastes sweet, but it turns to gravel in the mouth. Dark secrets in one's life can cause everything in life to taste like dirt.
When my son was in his first year of college, he was asked by some of his friends why he got along with his parents so well. He said it was easy because he had nothing to hide from them. Being his dad, I have to say when I heard about this I thought it was a very mature answer. What he was saying made perfect sense because there were no dark secrets separating us from each other. Dark secrets resulting from sin, guilt, and shame keep family members, friends and co-workers separated from each other.
God has taken down the walls of separation by the blood of Christ. There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. Even a dark secret cannot separate us from God if it is confessed to the Lord. Rom. 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
What is often not seen by people who walk under the burden and weight of a dark secret is the moment the dark secret is out in the light the secret and the devil has no more power over the person who has been carrying it. It literally dissipates and loses its power.
Why does the enemy of our soul try to get us to be afraid of fessing up? It is the devil's plan to keep us ashamed and walking with a guilty conscience in fear of what others will think or feel about us. Yet under that deception and duplicity, we are showing ourselves to the world we are not our true selves. We become who we really are when we are fully unloaded of all the pretense and stuff that keeps us protecting our fallen and false image.
Prov. 13:7 Some who are poor pretend to be rich; others who are rich pretend to be poor. With all this pretending going on, no one is actually living. Jesus came to give us our true lives back and to live them fully in Christ. John 10:10b I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
Joseph's brothers were carrying a big dark secret for a long part of their lives. They had lied to their father Jacob saying Joseph had been killed by a lion, when in fact the brothers had sold him into slavery. Gen. 37:31 Then the brothers killed a young goat and dipped Joseph’s robe in its blood. 32 They sent the beautiful robe to their father with this message: “Look at what we found. Doesn’t this robe belong to your son?” Ouch! I don't know how you feel, but what a cruel and deceptive thing to do to a father.
These brothers lived with a terrible dark secret for years until the day Joseph was resurrected, so to speak, as the head over Egypt. The day of reckoning had come as it always does in life. Num. 32:23 But if you will not do so, behold, you have sinned against the LORD, and be sure your sin will find you out. The family was reunited after the lie and sin had been exposed. There was no more power in the dark secret once it had been brought out into the light of day.
If you are walking around with a dark secret that has kept you down and under circumstances, then it is time to bring it out into the open so that you may be free in all that God has for you. John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free. Let the light of the Lord into your situation and see what the Lord can do. Blessings.
