Servant To The Lenders

Proverbs 17:18 It’s poor judgment to guarantee another person’s debt or put up security for a friend.

Debt, debt, and more debt is the spirit at work in this world. We, well-meaning parents, are encouraging our children to go into slavery in a roundabout way. Prov. 22:7 The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. For the sake of a diploma that does not guarantee a good job or career in any of the fields the student is studying through, we have pushed the education mantra on these students to the point of ridiculous debt. Make no mistake: the borrower is a servant to the lender.
Garry Mason, who writes for the Globe And Mail, states in his article Another Day Smarter, But Deeper In Debt." To see what can happen when a student debt problem goes unaddressed, one only has to look to the United States, where the situation has reached crisis levels.
The amount of outstanding student debt there has topped $1-trillion. That amount, and the delinquencies, are escalating at frightening rates. A Bank of Montreal student survey released last month revealed that postsecondary students expect to graduate from school with more than $26,000 in debt, on average. Students in B.C. are expected to be nearly $35,000 in debt."
Why are parents encouraging their sons and daughters to acquire such debt? Is it because these same parents have learned to be a debt servant to all their own masters and do not know any other way?
One of the conditions for my youngest son to return and live at home so that he could finish his last two years of college for a business degree was that there would be no student loans of any kind. I said that if that was the way he wanted to go about getting his education then there was no point in moving back home, because I would be enabling him to believe the lie that so many students have bought into.
I would be helping him become a servant slave to the Govt. and bank lenders of this easy to get money, but oh so hard to pay it back. My son did not like what I had proposed but agreed to my terms. He had to work two jobs and do his study, but at the end of the two years, he had graduated with a good average and debt free. He was not a servant to anyone or any financial institution. He was able to start his life debt free and not have a financial albatross hanging around his neck like so many other students.
Students have signed up for these unsecured loans and debt in droves. They start life with a huge debt-load before they even have their first career job. The devil is now managing their time, and time for God and ministry will not be affordable on Satan's payment plan.
These gullible students have signed contracts of unsecured loans that are setting a lifestyle precedence in their lives. Debt will become a way of living. Prov. 6:2 Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. 5 Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
I am often asked for help by the parents of these debt loaded students who have cornered themselves with an overwhelming amount of debt. The odd thing is, that often, the parents want another loan or a guarantor to get themselves and their prodigy out of debt by acquiring more debt. That is the problem, you cannot get out of debt by entering into more debt. They have become a poor risk to others and themselves but can no longer see it.
This thinking has become a heart and character problem, not a money issue. The feeling that is tearing them apart is the fact that they are servants to the lender. They have become full-time slaves. These slaves to debt are no longer free and they now know it deep down in their hearts but cannot find a way out. They find it hard to live for Christ because all their time is used up serving with great payments another master. Matt. 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
We were created to live free in Christ and not put ourselves into bondage of any kind. This method of slow death and drudgery is an attack on the church because the debt mentality has crept into the church. This is one of the plans of the enemy of our soul.
If Satan can have you working all the time to cover your debt on things you do not need to impress people you do not like, then the devil has got your use of time scheduled for life. Rom. 13:8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.
Is saving and working for something of value hard? Sometimes it is, but well worth it when you own it and it does not own you. Over time when the children of the old testament were sold into slavery to cover the accumulated debt because of a chosen lifestyle, there is a moral deficit that comes across the land along with drought, famine, and war. Do we, as a nation, have to go through these events to find out that the borrower is a servant to the lender? I pray not. Hag. 1:5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.
